Forget the past...Embrace the NEW!

Do not earnestly remember the former things; neither consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs forth; do you not perceive and know it and will you not give heed to it? I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.

(Isaiah 43:18-19)

Lately God has been speaking to me about forgetting the old and embracing the new. It began with me talking to Him about some dissapointments and challenges over the past couple of years. As I would try to move forward in some decisions that I needed to make I just felt stuck, weighed down and unable to keep moving. Then I realized that the dissapointments and challenges just had really sapped my strength. God spoke to me and said, "The memories of the past couple of years are weighing you down and holding you back. Why don't you just forget those years and start fresh today, brand new without the thought of them. You can take the lessons and wisdom that you gained from them, but leave the memories of dissapointment, challenge and pain behind, and just believe that I am going to make things new and better." Immediately at the suggestion that I could leave "those years" behind, my heart began to get excited and feel hope. I thought, "God can I really do that? And if so, how?"

I began to understand that this is part of our inheritance in Christ, the power to choose to forget things that serve us no good in remembering them, or things that hurt us or keep us paralyzed. Part of our inheritance also is to be able to have a new start, a new mindset, a fresh renewal whenever we need it. Lamentations 3:22-23 says "It is because of the Lord's mercy and loving-kindness that we are not consumed...His compassions fail us not, And they are new every morning." I love this tender affirmation of God's love for us. At any time in our journey we can have a new day and start fresh. This is important because if we stay focused on dissapointment, hurt or the past, we will be unaware and unable to SEE when God sends opportunity or something good our way.

How do we forget? First of all by making a choice with our will and saying out of our mouths something like, "Lord I choose to forget this situation (name it, describe it). I choose to put it behind me. I ask for your help." Then every time the thought and emotions come to your mind, you say again "I have chosen to forget that situation and to put it behind me" and here is the important part...You replace those thoughts with other thoughts...You choose to think on something else that is meaningful and gives you life. What worked for me was to replace the thoughts of dissapointment with scripture and hopes and dreams for my future. What is interesting is the day after I had this talk with God, I was thumbing through my Bible and came across the scripture above from Isaiah 43:18-19, which speaks of 'forgetting the past and embracing the new.' Now I had read this scripture in years past, but forgotten it. So here God was showing me in His Word not only could I forget the past, but that I could look for and expect "a new thing" in my life! I can definitely get excited about that! I am totally expecting God to do something new, amazing and refreshing in my life.

What about you?Have you faced some dissapointments or challenges. Do you feel stuck, paralyed and unmotivated? Is there something that has been weighing you down? If so, I want you to know that you can lay aside and forget what has been holding you back, hurting you and stealing your strength. You can put the past behind you with God's help and know that there is hope, renewal and joy for you right now! Expect it, God is about to do something new in your life!

Praying for You
